MessageBroadcast is an IT service provider. Ouch just dont do it. It really doesn't increase reliability. If anything its going to decrease it. Hardware raid cards are so cheap these days that in reality it would probably save you money in the long run. Shoot they are so cheap buy two raid cards and put one on the shelf just in case the other dies.
Software solutions to hardware issues? Just say NO! In big iron, RAID is considered file system level and is software. There is no reason for this to actually be a hardware thing if the software worked the way that it is supposed to. Now RAID I've definitely seen and know of several people with hardware RAID 5 that have seen those same problems. So everyone keeps on saying how RAID5 is no good.
I've also had it with hardware RAID. Yes they're cheap but can be a pain to deal with. My rocketraid just failed for no reason. One drive was marked as need to replace and when I did, it set all of the other drives as "initialized" for no reason.
Needless to say I lost my data. Fortunately I'm not stupid and have everything backed up on another actually two other machines. So, my question is, what DOES work? The biggest drives these days are 4TB and they're expensive , so if I want any redundancy I will need to buy two of those but I will only be limited to 3.
